SEATTLE - February 1, 2010 - The Puget Sound Health Alliance has hired John Gallagher, a media specialist with more than 20 years experience in public relations and journalism, to serve as the organization's Director of Communication and Development.
Most recently Gallagher was in charge of media relations and public awareness campaigns for the American Academy of Ophthalmology in San Francisco, whose membership includes more than 26,000 doctors. Serving as the Director of Public Relations, he significantly increased coverage for the Academy and expanded visibility in major media outlets.
Mary McWilliams, Executive Director of the Alliance, praised Gallagher's skill set, "John has an impressive background in media relations and healthcare communications, and understands member-based health care organizations. His commitment to quality health care and proven record of transparent and informed communications to members, the media, and the public, aligns well with the goals of the Alliance.
We are excited to have him as our new Director of Communication and Development."
Prior to joining the Academy in 2007, Gallagher was the Director of Corporate Communications and the Media Relations Manager for Chiron Corporation, a biotechnology company. Serving as the chief spokesperson, Gallagher led communications through major events such as a domestic terrorism threat, a major acquisition and product launches. He was awarded a PRSA Compass Award while at Chiron for his excellence in crisis communications.
"This is an exciting time to be working in health care." Gallagher said, "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to promote the important work of the Alliance to improve the quality and affordability of health care for the entire region."
Earlier in his career, Gallagher worked as a journalist for publications such as Time Magazine and The Advocate. He holds a Master's Degree from Vanderbilt University and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University.
Gallagher is replacing Diane Stollenwerk, who has worked with the Alliance since its inception five years ago. Stollenwerk is leaving to pursue contract work, personal writing and travel.
